A Solid but Flawed Film: 'Wolf Warrior' Review for iPhone Installation Fans

The latest installment in the Wolf Warrior franchise, Zhan Lang 2, has finally arrived on our screens, and fans of military action movies can expect a solid yet imperfect film. At approximately ninety minutes long, the movie's concise runtime is one of its strengths, making it an easy watch without overstaying its welcome.

The lead character, a resilient non-conformist with a soft core, is easy to empathize with, and his tough yet tender female sidekick is equally sympathetic. The action scenes are intense and will keep the audience on the edge of their seats towards the end. However, after a weak start, the movie still manages to end up being solid.

Unfortunately, the film also includes an unhealthy dose of Chinese propaganda, which is common in military action movies. The locations are equally bland, mostly limited to exchangeable fields and forests. The story is forgettable and unimaginative, with cringe-worthy acting performances at times. Lead actor Wu Jing's stiff body language and overacting whenever he expresses himself verbally create an unbalanced contrast.

One of the most notable flaws in the film is its use of special effects, which look as if they were made by a company specializing in video games from the mid-nineties. The movie constantly exposes these flaws, making it difficult to immerse oneself in the action scenes. Additionally, the pack of wolves in the beginning of the movie looks nothing like real wolves, and the bullet fired in slow-motion had me laughing out loud.

It's a mystery to me why Wolf Warrior became one of the most successful cinematic franchises in the People's Republic of China. Despite its flaws, fans of military action movies can still give this solid average film a try and will get exactly what they can expect from it.
